Key Pieces of Digital Development and Research.

My theme for the type face is the royal mail. Looking at all their type faces..

Creating my own typeface. So an exploration of type today..

The Title of My TypeFace is 'PARCEL'

After doing some paper based design work, I am going to do a simple 'Box' font. I think what will make this font interesting is the use of material.

Research into Parcels...

Words to keep in mind: Bundles, this way up, straight edge, fragile, string, celotape

Research into the symbol. ^^

Typeface 1

'THIS WAY UP'

Still needs some work, but i have the basic down. Needs a tidy up and then I have an idea for presenting it.

TypeFace 2. I based my alphabet on the handle with care diagram. I used the square box like a grid for creating the type. I know need to look into vectorizing the type and experimenting with width etc.

TypeFace3

All Three

Considering the format of my new typefaces. The usual considered format of my designs, is to be in the form of labels, so maybe this is something i should consider. If you look at the middle image, i think if I do something similar to this it could be quite nice. I can then design the front of the box too.

This way up - Regular, Italic, Bold, Extra Bold.
Caps, small caps.

The two final layouts to present at the Crit on Wednesday.
The next thing that I need to consider is stock. I have used colour and photographs to create the brown paper feel, so I just need to think about the thickness. The cover should be a lot thicker than the pages inside I think. Maybe a good idea to experiment with some acetone prints onto actual cardboard.

Creating the front cover for This Way Up. It has always been in the back of my mind to look into doing label design or something to do with tape as this is a significant way of the symbols being used. So I did a mock up of it in photo shop, and I think it looks quite good.

Keep Dry Booklet, lining up this one now and trying to make the layout a little more interesting, but still quite simple, as I want the typeface to be the only message, do not want anything else to confused it. I think these are almost ready to print now. I just need to sort out the front covers, but this illustrator does not seem to like opening photos so may be a bit frustrating!
I have now created a set of numbers, so for this typeface I have CAPS, LOWER CAPS, REGULAR, ITALIC, BOLD, NUMBERS. I feel I have looked into this typeface in greater depth to the other one, as I feel it is more adaptable. When I started playing around with the keep dry typeface it all became a bit distorted and either was not obvious as the character or that it was an umbrella.
After printing the booklet out, I was able to spot the annoying lining up details a lot easier on Paper. So I went back into Illustrator and lined everything up and created a (slightly confusing) grid. The annoying thing with this is I have yet to find a way to create my typeface into an actual type without having to pay money to a generator website.

Having already created the layout for the This Way up booklet, it was easy to start putting together this one.
The overall layout. The idea is that the front and back covers are the image of the top of the cardboard box and the inside pages are just a similar colours.

I thought about trying to make the layout a bit more interesting. I feel like this way up is a bit of a 'boyish' design, but the keep dry font evens it out!

My colour Palette, brown for the colour of the paper, and then a variety of reds, black and grey.

I thought that the one above, could look quite nice as a single print, with the gold colour foiled using the heat press.
A booklet of 6 X 1st class stamps - 'because everyone likes to receive a letter.'

Sheets of the Stamps, that I am going to print as stickers, as this is the way they seem to be done more recently, and make its more professional.

I Have been looking at stamps today. Have looked at creating a sheet of stamps and a booklet of stamps. I am booked in on the vinyl cutter tomorrow, so want to have these finished by the end of the today, and move onto another context tomorrow.

I created a selection of final pieces.
1. Sheet of stamps
2. Stamp booklet
3. Postcards
4. Promo Poster
5. Foiled Print

Now, i have used the font lab software to generate my own font! Whilst using the software it enables me to pick up on some things about the typeface, and I edited the letters within the software, making it more professional.

Final Piece:
I decided to scrap the L Shape booklet and do something a bit more sophisticated. Below you can see how i have created a little pack to promote the typeface. I created the booklet, a simple booklet, in indesign. I used one of the foil prints to wrap around the booklet and act as a band and one of the stick stamps to seal it. Inside the bookelt is a postcard and a booklet of stamps. I used the colour red to relate to the royal Mail.
